Dr Shravya Gurnurkar, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Oliva Skin & Hair Clinic talks about the hair loss condition and the various treatments available for treating it. Hair loss affects 21 million women and 35 million men and can occur as early as in the 20s.
Androgenetic Alopecia or patterned hair loss occurs due to increased production of DHT, a male hormone, which is also present in women in smaller quantities. The hormonal imbalance causes increased sensitivity of the hair follicles towards DHT, causing the hair to shed faster.
Causes Of Hair Loss For Men:
• Hereditary
• Stress
• Diet Deficiencies
• Insulin Resistance
• Smoking
• Obesity
Causes Of Hair Loss For Women:
• Hormonal Issues such as PCOS
• Insulin Resistance
• Pregnancy
• Obesity
• Menopause
Hair Loss Management Solutions:
• Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
• Stem Cell Therapy
• Low-Level Laser Therapy
• Growth Factor Therapy
• Scalp Micropigmentation
• Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix
• Topical & Oral Medications
• Hair Transplantation
• Mesotherapy
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy or PRP Therapy is a non-surgical treatment, which involves the following steps:
• Collection of a blood sample drawn from the patient’s arm.
• Separation of the plasma from the blood sample and using it for boosting hair growth.
• Activation of the platelets as they are rich in growth factors.
• Finally, injecting the platelet-rich plasma into the affected areas on the scalp.
The platelets present in our body are responsible for repairing and regenerating damaged tissues.
Stages Of Hair Growth After PRP Treatment:
• 1-3 months: you will experience a decrease in hair shedding.
• 3-6 months: the hair follicles will get activated.
• 6-9 months: you will observe an increase in the hair volume.
PRP is effective in stimulating dormant hair follicles towards new growth, thus, treating hair loss. 6-8 sessions are necessary on an average, with a four-week interval. Each session lasts for 30 minutes, and results are visible after the second session.
PRP vs Other Treatments:
• PRP vs Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cells help in healing injured and inflamed tissue via substitution. The success rate of stem cell therapy is less because PRP uses the patient’s platelets whereas, in stem cell therapy, the cells are produced in the lab and derived from plants or any other source which the body can reject.
The time taken to export, transplant and inject the cells can further reduce the success rate, unlike PRP, where the dermatologists inject the platelets immediately.
• PRP vs Growth Factor Treatment
The growth factor treatment uses a dermaroller to inject the stimulants derived from plants. PRP is more effective as it can penetrate deeper into the scalp, stimulating hair growth.
• PRP vs Low-level Laser Therapy
Low-level laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment which is more suited for non-extreme cases of hair loss such as bald patches not extending more than 4 inches or for conditions which have existed for five years or less. It attempts to stimulate the red blood cells to provide nutrients and oxygen to the scalp. However, PRP is effective in treating a wide range of hair loss and hair thinning problems.
• PRP vs Scalp Micropigmentation
A non-surgical process, scalp micropigmentation glues pigment to the scalp, giving an illusion of full hairline. However, PRP is more effective as it induces actual hair regrowth.
• PRP vs Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM)
In the PRFM treatment, fibrins, a component of plasma, is injected in the dormant hair follicles. The activated platelets are concentrated into a fibrin mesh, making this treatment as effective as the PRP treatment.
• PRP vs Oral & Topical Medications
The US-FDA has cleared only topical Minoxidil and Finasteride for treating hair loss. Dermatologists use these medications in conjunction with advanced treatments like PRP to reverse hair loss.
• PRP vs Hair Transplantation
Hair transplantation is an invasive treatment that involves the grafting of active follicles on the scalp. The grafts may be rejected by the body, resulting in lower success rates. Comparatively, PRP offers better hair regrowth results except in the case of bald spots which have no scope of regrowth.
• PRP vs Mesotherapy
Diluted solutions of oral and topical medications like minoxidil and vitamins, growth factors and nutrients are injected using superficial injections. However, there is insufficient data to prove its safety and efficacy. Compared to PRP, mesotherapy takes longer time, is more expensive and has more side effects.
PRP treatment is comparatively more result-oriented, effective and safe than all the other hair loss treatments.
